A dead battery is one of the most common reasons cars won’t start. Fortunately, batteries usually give warning signs first.
How long batteries last
Most car batteries last about three to five years. Heat is hard on batteries, so in hot Carolina summers they can wear out on the shorter end of that range.
Warning signs
- The engine cranks slowly, especially on cold mornings
- Headlights dim at idle or when you start the car
- The battery light comes on
- Electrical features act up
- White or blue corrosion on the terminals
- A swollen battery case
Make your battery last longer
- Keep the terminals clean and tight
- Avoid lots of very short trips, which don’t fully recharge the battery
- Don’t leave lights or accessories on with the engine off
- If a car sits for weeks, use a battery maintainer
Get it tested
A quick test checks the battery and the charging system. If your battery is three or more years old, it is worth testing before summer and winter.
