Brakes wear gradually, so problems can sneak up on you. These are the signs to watch for.
1. Squealing or squeaking
Many brake pads have a small metal tab that squeals when the pads are getting thin. It is a reminder to schedule service soon.
2. Grinding
Grinding often means the pads are worn through and metal is scraping the rotors. Get it checked right away — waiting turns a pad job into a pad-and-rotor job.
3. A soft or spongy pedal
If the pedal sinks further than usual, there may be air or moisture in the brake fluid or a leak. This is a safety issue.
4. Vibration when braking
A pulsing pedal or shaking steering wheel during braking usually points to warped or unevenly worn rotors.
5. Pulling to one side
A stuck caliper, a collapsed hose or uneven pad wear can make the car pull when you brake.
6. The brake warning light
It can mean low brake fluid, a problem with the system, or simply that the parking brake is on. If it stays on, have it checked.
7. Burning smell
After hard braking on hills it can be normal, but in everyday driving it can mean a dragging brake.
Brake fluid needs changing too
Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time. Many manufacturers recommend replacing it every two to three years — check your manual.
