How Often Should You Change Your Oil?

How Often Should You Change Your Oil?

Oil keeps your engine’s moving parts from grinding against each other. Changing it on time is the single most important thing you can do to make an engine last.

The 3,000-mile rule is outdated

Many modern cars running synthetic oil are designed to go roughly 5,000 to 10,000 miles between changes. Older engines and conventional oil usually need shorter intervals. Your owner’s manual is the authority for your car.

Use your oil life monitor

Many cars show an “oil life” percentage that adjusts to how you drive. When it gets low, schedule the change.

When to change it sooner

Manufacturers often list a “severe service” schedule. It applies if you:

  • Mostly take short trips (under about 5 miles)
  • Sit in stop-and-go traffic a lot
  • Tow or carry heavy loads
  • Drive in very hot weather or on dusty roads
  • Have an older, higher-mileage engine

Check your oil between changes

Once a month, with the engine off and the car level, pull the dipstick, wipe it, reinsert it and read the level. Top it up if it is low. Some engines use a little oil between changes; a big drop is worth a check.

Do not forget the filter

A new oil filter should go in with every oil change.
