Long, humid Carolina summers put extra stress on your car. A little preparation in late spring prevents breakdowns on hot days.
Air conditioning
If the A/C blows warm or weakly, have it checked before the hottest weeks, when shops are busiest. Strange smells can mean a dirty cabin filter.
Cooling system
Check the coolant level (engine cold) and look for leaks or cracked hoses. If your temperature gauge creeps up in traffic, get it checked right away — overheating can damage an engine.
Battery
Heat speeds up battery wear. If yours is three years old or more, get it tested. See our battery guide.
Tires
Hot pavement raises tire pressure and temperature. Check pressure in the morning and watch for worn tread before summer thunderstorms.
Wipers and washer fluid
Summer storms come fast. Replace streaking wipers and keep washer fluid full.
Keep an emergency kit
Water, a phone charger, a flashlight and jumper cables are worth keeping in the car.
