Buying from a dealer in North Carolina is simpler than many people expect, because the dealer handles most of the paperwork. Here is what to expect. Fees and rules can change, so check with NCDMV for current details.
What to bring
- A valid driver’s license
- Proof of North Carolina auto insurance for the car you are buying
- Your down payment
- If financing: recent pay stubs and proof of address
- If trading in: the title or your loan information, and both keys
Title and registration
When you buy from a dealer, the dealer typically handles the title application and registration with NCDMV. You may leave with a temporary tag while the permanent plate and registration are processed.
Highway Use Tax
North Carolina charges a 3% Highway Use Tax on vehicle purchases, collected when the title is transferred. It is included in your paperwork.
Insurance
North Carolina requires liability insurance on registered vehicles. If you finance, the lender will also require comprehensive and collision coverage.
Inspection
Your car will need its annual inspection before each registration renewal. Read our NC inspection guide.
