Check Engine Light On? What It Means and What to Do

Check Engine Light On? What It Means and What to Do

The check engine light means your car’s computer has detected a problem with the engine, emissions or related systems. It can be minor or serious — the only way to know is to read the code.

Steady light vs. flashing light

  • Steady: something needs attention soon. You can usually keep driving, but schedule a diagnosis.
  • Flashing: usually a severe engine misfire. Slow down, avoid hard acceleration and get it checked as soon as possible. Continued driving can damage the catalytic converter, which is expensive.

Common causes

  • A loose or worn gas cap
  • A failing oxygen sensor
  • Worn spark plugs or ignition coils
  • A vacuum leak
  • A failing catalytic converter
  • Mass airflow sensor problems

Why a code is only the start

A scan tool gives a code, like “P0300 random misfire.” The code points to a system, not always the exact part. Proper diagnosis finds the real cause so you are not paying to replace parts by guesswork.

It matters for your inspection

In North Carolina counties that require emissions testing — including Rowan — a car with the check engine light on will not pass. See our NC inspection guide.
