Whether you are heading to the coast or up to the Blue Ridge, a quick check before a long drive can save your trip.
A week before
- Oil: if you are close to your next change, do it before you leave
- Tires: check pressure (including the spare) and tread
- Brakes: any noise or vibration should be checked first — mountain driving is hard on brakes
- Battery: test it if it is three or more years old
- Fluids: coolant, brake fluid and washer fluid
- A/C: make sure it is cold
The day before
- Test all lights and the horn
- Check the wipers
- Load heavy items low and centered, and don’t overload the car
Pack an emergency kit
- Jumper cables or a portable jump starter
- Flashlight and phone charger
- Water and snacks
- First-aid kit
- Your insurance card and roadside assistance number
On the road
Take breaks every couple of hours, and watch your temperature gauge on long climbs.
