A pre-purchase inspection (PPI) is a once-over by a mechanic before you buy a used car. It is one of the smartest steps you can take, especially with a private-party sale.
What a mechanic looks at
- Engine condition, leaks, belts and hoses
- Brakes, rotors and brake fluid
- Suspension and steering parts
- Tires and alignment wear patterns
- Stored trouble codes, even if the check engine light is off
- Signs of accident repair, rust or flood damage
- Battery and charging system
How to use the results
An inspection does not have to end the deal. Small findings, like worn brake pads or an upcoming tire replacement, are useful when you negotiate. Big findings — frame damage, a failing transmission, signs of flood damage — are a reason to walk away.
When it matters most
- Private sales, where there is usually no warranty
- Older or higher-mileage cars
- Cars with gaps in their service history
- Any car being sold “as is”
