You can’t control gas prices, but you can control how much fuel you use. These habits add up.
- Keep tires properly inflated. Underinflated tires increase rolling resistance.
- Drive smoothly. Hard acceleration and braking waste fuel.
- Slow down a little on the highway. Fuel economy usually drops off at higher speeds.
- Don’t idle for long. If you are parked for more than a minute, turning the engine off usually saves fuel.
- Remove extra weight. Clear out heavy items you don’t need to carry around.
- Take off empty roof racks. They add wind drag.
- Combine errands. A warm engine is more efficient than several cold starts.
- Use cruise control on the highway when it is safe.
- Use the recommended oil grade. It is listed in your owner’s manual.
- Keep up with maintenance. A clogged air filter on older cars, misfires or a faulty oxygen sensor can hurt mileage. See what a tune-up includes.
