Your trade-in can make a big difference in your next car deal. A little preparation can raise its value.
Know what you owe
Call your lender for the payoff amount. If the car is worth more than you owe, that difference (your equity) goes toward the next car. If you owe more, the difference is called negative equity and is usually added to the new loan.
Clean it inside and out
A clean car makes a better first impression. Remove personal items, vacuum and wash it.
Gather records
Service records show the car was cared for. Bring both keys, the owner’s manual and the title or loan information.
Fix the small stuff, skip the big stuff
Replacing a burnt-out bulb or worn wipers is cheap. Major repairs usually don’t pay for themselves in trade-in value.
Be honest about condition
Accidents and mechanical issues usually show up in an appraisal or history report anyway, and being upfront speeds things up.
Get a real number
Online estimates are a starting point. An in-person appraisal accounts for the car’s actual condition and local demand.
